“(Song) I wrote ‘Zeze’ from the perspective of Minginho, the lime-orange tree in the novel. Zeze is innocent, yet cruel in some ways. Looking just at the character, there are many contradictions. That’s why I found Zeze attractive and sexy.”

“Zeze was created from the perspective of Minguinho, the lime-orange tree in the novel, and Zeze is pure but cruel in some ways. As a character, Zeze has many contradictions. That’s why I found Zeze attractive and sexy.”

At a fan meeting held on the 23rd of the previous month, IU had said that “Zeze” was inspired by My Sweet Orange Tree, adding, “I made the song very easily. It’s a song I like and feel affection for.”

“I think there are people who think that way, and some people may say, “I don’t really know.” No one has the right to tell that person, “Your opinion is wrong and that’s an excessive interpretation.” You can’t force a single interpretation on anyone. I can’t force my thoughts on people or stop them from thinking that way, either. That’s what I think.”

A controversy arose over interpreting “Jeje,” a five-year-old victim of domestic violence who appears in the autobiographical novel My Sweet Orange Tree by novelist José Mauro de Vasconcelos (1920–1984), through a pedophilic perspective.
