“It’s a work that reflects on the value of human life through a doctor named Sashal, who is a metaphor for a “lucky person” in modern society, where most people are unhappy. But more than that, what resonated most with me was Sashal’s way of embodying the ideal human relationships I hope for.”

In the conversation that followed, Kino said he wanted to introduce to readers A Fortunate Man by John Berger, a novelist and art critic who won the Booker Prize for his 1972 novel G. “It’s the story of a doctor named Sashal who practiced medicine for 25 years in a rural village in England. Sashal is a little different from ordinary people in the way he speaks and acts. But he treats his patients more humanely, not only as a doctor but also as a member of the village, and the villagers open their hearts to him because of the way he is.” Kino, who believes that the reader’s interpretation is as important as the author’s intention, also offered his own interpretation of A Fortunate Man.
