“I remember the quiet shock I felt when I read this book. Since then, whenever I’ve gotten stuck with improvisation or fallen into routine and been unable to give a good performance, I’ve often returned to it.”

I came across Stephen Nachmanovitch’s *Play: The Flow of Creation Never Runs Dry* in the music section in the same way. I wanted to broaden my musical horizons but didn’t know what books to look for, so I browsed around—and this one caught my eye because it was about improvisation. I remember its discussion of how to approach and prepare for improvisation, and the quiet shock I felt when I read it. Since then, whenever I’ve gotten stuck with improvisation or fallen into routine and been unable to give a good performance, I’ve often returned to it.
