This is A Sociological Reading of Art by Choi Saet-byul and Kim Su-jeong. It was published by Dongnyeok. The title says very intuitively and clearly what the book is about: “art” and “a sociological reading”—it’s a book about the sociology of art. When we think about a work of art, we often analyze and remember it in terms of who made it, when and how they made it, what its style is like, or what something in the work represents. There are lots of books about that, too. But from the perspective of the sociology of art, this book analyzes the relationship a work has with society, and how it is enjoyed and consumed by the public, or by consumers. Of course, this relationship goes both ways, so it includes the influence of art on society as well as society’s influence on art. Starting with the question “What is art, and what should count as art?”, the book makes the perspective of the sociology of art easier to understand through a range of examples, including films, dramas, and songs that are familiar to Korean readers in the 21st century. As soon as I read it, I posted my thoughts on Instagram, too. In a word, it was “a book I wish I’d read just before starting graduate school.” That’s because the book explains the perspectives of key figures and important concepts in the sociology of art in very accessible language. The biggest difficulty I faced when I first started graduate school was exactly that: I entered without any academic background, so even the names of the thinkers were unfamiliar to me. This book, for example, explains why the Frankfurt School made the arguments it did, what Benjamin said about the aura’s gradual decline in the age of mechanical reproduction, and what that means—as if taking you up the stairs one step at a time. I came across many of the names and concepts that had left me so flustered in class (laughs), and thought, “If only I’d read this book—even just this one—before starting school, I wouldn’t have been so lost!” Of course, it’s a slim book of around 300 pages, and any one figure, concept, or perspective in this field could be the subject of a thesis, so it would be hard to say, “I’ve learned all about the sociology of art from this one book!” Since the book says from its prologue that its aim is to be “something anyone can read with interest and ease” (p. 7), I think it’s fair to call it an introductory guide for prospective students and readers outside the field—a popular nonfiction book that looks like a theoretical text. That’s speaking in terms of its level of difficulty! But there’s ample reason to read it, because it gives you the chance to think about and question the relationship between art and society from a variety of angles. With books about art, it’s easy to think of ones that use Western artworks from centuries ago as examples. This book includes those works, of course, but it also offers many recent examples that are very familiar to us today, such as Boys Over Flowers, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, and BTS. That makes it even more enjoyable to read. Art is difficult. Modern art in particular can often seem obscure, but as I read this book, some of the reasons why began to make sense. And when you think carefully about the complex, close relationship between art and society, you may feel that some of this difficulty is inevitable. So this is a book I would recommend not only to people considering a major related to art, but to everyone who is interested in art.
