“I think it's a book that even people with no interest in philosophy can approach easily, and that gives them a stepping stone toward developing a philosophy of their own.”

“A book called ‘Happy Reading of the Analects’ that I came across when I was 20 suddenly came to mind. At the time, while reading the book, I felt for the first time that my thinking was awakening. Thanks to that memory, as I explored thinkers other than Confucius, I came across ‘Essays on Eastern Philosophy,’ which explains the major ideas of the Hundred Schools of Thought in an accessible way. I liked that the various ideas and interpretations weren’t embellished or narrow-minded, so I could read them using my own judgment and thoughts. I think it’s a book that people with no interest in philosophy can easily engage with, and that helps them take the first steps toward having a philosophy of their own.” ◆ Today’s highlighted passage: The highest good is like water. Water greatly benefits all things, yet does not assert itself or compete, and dwells in low places that everyone dislikes. That is why it is close to the original nature of the Way. - Laozi, ‘Tao Te Ching,’ chapter 8 “As I read the book, I would relate it to my own concerns that resonated with real life. I’m active in a group and share my life with many friends, without distinguishing between public and private matters. Since I have the role of captain, this was a sentence that helped me set many thoughts aside when I was thinking about where I ought to be and trying not to be swept up in various events and emotions.”
