Since they need to come easily to the ear when heard, everyday words that anyone might use are the main ingredient. Lyrics that flamboyantly reveal the lyricist’s individuality and philosophy are, rather, awkward and quickly grow tiresome, making it a rather peculiar genre. Even so, some lyrics have a power that’s hard to explain: one day, you happen to hear them and burst into tears, or they only truly find their way into your heart after many years. Where does that power come from? Reading this book, I finally realize the power of ordinary words. This perspective, which pinpoints the “time lag” in discordant relationships, the aggression contained in the phrase “I don’t understand,” the subtle syllables of “radiant,” and the similar direction and differences of “anger” and “courage,” is intellectual yet kind. I think I now understand a little why the lyrics Kim Eana creates so precisely soothe the hearts of so many people. The way we use and handle words is ultimately connected to the way we live, too, and as I close the book, I find that I have come to genuinely like this sensitive and honest person.”
“노랫말은 시와 달라서 너무 생경한 단어를 쓰기도 어렵고 지나치게 난해한 표현을 써서도 안 된다. 들을 때 귀에 쉽게 감겨 와야 하니 누구나 쓸 법한 일상어가 주재료다. 작사가의 개성과 철학을 화려하게 드러낸 가사는 오히려 어색하고 쉽게 질리니 참 묘한 장르다. 그럼에도 어떤 노랫말은 설명하기 힘든 힘을 갖고 있어 어느 날 우연히 듣다가 눈물을 쏟게 하고, 오랜 세월이 지나서야 비로소 마음에 들어오기도 한다. 그런 힘은 어디서 비롯될까? 이 책을 읽으며 나는 비로소 보통의 언어들이 지닌 힘을 깨닫는다. 관계의 어긋난 ‘시차’를, ‘이해가 안 간다’는 말이 품은 공격성을, ‘찬란하다’의 미묘한 음절을, ‘분노’와 ‘용기’가 지닌 비슷한 방향성과 차이를 짚어내는 이 시선은 지적이면서도 다정하다. 김이나 씨가 만드는 노랫말이 그토록 많은 사람의 마음을 정확하게 어루만지는 이유를 조금 알 것도 같다. 말을 쓰고 다루는 방식은 결국 삶을 사는 방식과도 닿아 있어, 나는 책을 덮으며 이 섬세하고 솔직한 사람이 진심으로 좋아졌다.”
